Prominent Trade Unionist Has United Support of Organized Labor
Washington, D. C.--The members of organized labor in the District of Columbia are hopeful that President Roosevelt may appoint John Locher, well known Washington labor official and public spirited citizen, as one of the three Commissioners of the District of Columbia to succeed Commissioner George E. Allen, who recently resigned.
Mr. Locher is president of the Washington Central Labor Union, secretary of the Building and Construction Trades Council, and the labor member of the District of Columbia Unemployment Compensation Board. In addition, he has been selected as the Central Labor Union's delegate to the A. F. of L. convention, which opens in Houston, Texas, October 3.
In view of the fact that the thousands of working men and women in the District of Columbia have profound interests in the administration of the District government, it is their general belief that the workers should have a representative on the Board of Commissioners to administer the law.
The appointment of Mr. Locher to the board has been strongly supported by the American Federation of Labor unions in the District. In addition, the Executive Council of the American Federation of Labor and the Maryland State and D. C. Federation of Labor have requested the President to appoint Mr. Locher.
Although in the neighborhood of one hundred persons have been suggested to President Roosevelt for this important position, it is believed that he will recognize the justice of organized labor's request for representation on the Board of Commissioners and name Mr. Locher to fill the vacancy.
