Full Text
The Massacre of Glencoe forms one of the bloodiest pages in the annals of England. The warrant by it was deliberately signed by the king, William the Third, with the view of quelling by a barbarous execution of one clan the turbulent spirit of the Highlanders. The outcry raised against the King for this cruel act was so great that he was obliged to invent some excuse to palliate it, and his pretense was, that he had subscribed the order amidst a heap of other papers without knowing the purport of it. The excuse now made by Mr. Van Buren for his recommendation of the New Army Bill is very much like this: The President finds that public indignation against him is strong, in consequence of the anxiety manifested by him to have Mr. Poinsett's army plan adopted, and he now endeavors to deny responsibility by saying that he knew nothing of it. The excuse may have served for a King of England, but it will not do for a President of the United States.
