War To The Knife—The Washington Republican, in noticing a letter of congratulation over the result of last Tuesday's election, by Mr. Lewis McKenzie, in which he refers to that paper as "interfering ignorant Virginia writers, especially in the first congressional district" says:

We sympathize with Lewis McKenzie, Register of Alexandria, in his congratulation to one of his copartners in iniquity over the result of the late presidential election, for we rejoice with him at that event. Ridicule, however, may be prompted by his considerations than those which seem to govern this Alexandria official. We are happy because the result redounds to the general welfare of the nation, while McKenzie may hope to be continued in office by the incoming administration, which he has labored to weaken by aiding in bringing defeat to the republican candidate for Congress, as is his State. We would not be moved to hand to lift the gauge of his political hypocrisy from him after all his treachery in chief if he had modestly retired from office at the close of his term, but we leave the next administration to settle with him for his violation of party and good faith, but for his letter of congratulation in which he takes to task our paper.

Continuing the Republican says: "If the republicans, respect and reward his base and persistent treachery to party and principle we shall then feel satisfied that we have mistaken their appreciation of what constitutes party good faith,"

It is understood that a determined effort will be made to oust Mr. McKenzie from his present position, and to accomplish this object a letter written by the Alexandria postmaster to Mr. Taylor, of Mitchell's station, Culpeper county, urging that Mrs. Harbour could not be elected and advising the republicans at that place to vote for Williams, has been secured and will be used against him.
