CONVENTION AT STAUNTON.

Our readers will bear in mind, that several weeks since, several gentlemen, from about thirteen counties of Virginia, met at Winchester, and recommended it to the different counties of the Commonwealth to send deputies to a Convention to be held at Staunton on the 1st inst. to confer upon certain amendments to the State Constitution, & the best means for calling a general Convention for that purpose. None of the lower counties have accepted the invitation; and those only to the westward of us have in any respect whatever complied with the recommendation. Some of these, in a way more or less public, through a greater or smaller number of citizens, have appointed deputies, who assembled at Staunton, on Monday the 19th inst.—On that day 65 gentlemen appeared from 3 counties two from each, except Bedford, which had one deputy only. The convention is composed of respectable citizens; several of them of high standing and known abilities; six members of Congress, and several members of the State Legislature, Gen. Breckenridge (of Botetourt) was called to the chair—a clerk, door-keeper, &c. were subsequently appointed.

Three propositions were submitted to the Convention; one was for a Convention of the people without the interposition of the Legislature; another, or an address to the Legislature to call one.— Gen. Blackburn of Bath, was against any Convention at all, believing that representation might be equalized in the Senate without it.

No conjecture was to be formed as to the decision of the Convention or the period of their adjournment, but they would probably rise in the course of the week.

Composed of respectable citizens including six Congress members and several State Legislature members. Gen. Breckenridge called to chair; clerk and door-keeper appointed. Propositions: convention without Legislature or address to Legislature to call one. Gen. Blackburn opposed any convention, favoring Senate representation equalization without it.
