The following editorial article from the Shawneetown paper, although written in haste, is so full of good sense that it needs no review to recommend it to the public. It is short, but speaks a language that all friends to their country should now hearken to. At the session of Congress before last, a bill passed the House of Representatives increasing the tariff of duties on imported goods. That bill proposed to place the manufacturing interest of the United States upon a safe and liberal footing--it proposed to encourage and protect the industry of our own country. Had that bill have passed, our country would have worn a different garment from that which it now wears. Instead of foreign frippery covering domestic bankruptcy, it would now be found clad in substantial homespun, reposing in the lap of plenty. And WHY it will be asked, did not this bill pass the SENATE? The answer is, a majority of ONE was against it. And however painful it may be to relate it, it is not the less true, that that one was a Senator from Illinois--the Hon. JESSE B. THOMAS. When ruin has overtaken us, surely our Senator will no longer neglect the great interests of the nation, to please a few sellers of the products of negro labor. If a tariff cannot be had, then we must look to the patriotism of our own people--and as was done in the time of the revolution, swear to wear nothing made by the subjects of foreign tyrants.
