Full Text

CHARLESTON, May 20.
A fire broke out this morning about one o'clock, on board the schr. Sally, capt. Gardner, of New York, lying at Pritchard's wharf. The alarm being early given, the activity of the citizens prevented the flames from spreading to the adjacent vessels, notwithstanding the difficulty of procuring water; the tide being at the lowest ebb. The fire originated in the cabin, but whether from carelessness or design is not yet ascertained; no person being on board at the time. The Sally put into this port a few days since, in distress, on her voyage from Richmond to New York; and having taken out her cargo, had undergone a thorough repair. Her quarter deck is entirely consumed; and her timbers we believe so much injured, as to render her hull unfit for repairs.
