PROSPECTS OF WAR.
If any credit can attach to present appearances and the declared intentions of the leading men in the house of representatives, we are decidedly of opinion that the people of this once free, prosperous and happy country are to experience in a short time the calamities of war, and that too with a nation whose power renders her peculiarly capable of waging it in a manner the most distressing of all others to a great portion of the people of the Atlantic states. Without a fleet, an army, and with a treasury exhausted through the blind policy of our rulers, are we to be plunged into a war with one of the most formidable powers in Europe in aid of a system laid down by one of the greatest tyrants the world ever saw, for the ruin of the only nation on earth capable of setting bounds to his insatiable ambition.
Those who are unacquainted with the characters of the leading men in our country, may place reliance on the affected sorrow which they express at the prospect of a War. We know, that they hail its approach with as sincere delight as a true patriot would hail some great national blessing. Their aim, their anxious hope, is, not to fight Great Britain, but to proscribe every man who shall presume to question executive infallibility.—We have the strongest evidence, resulting from the character of the men as well as from their own repeated assertions, for believing, that these are their true views. The Aurora, Democratic Press, Whig, and other papers conducted by imported patriots, rejoice that the country is about to be purged of tories. Thus we, who have generously extended our arms to the relief of distressed foreigners, are about to be dispossessed of our birth-right, and deprived of those rights in which we had liberally but incautiously invited others to participate.
Let those who value freedom, life and property, prepare themselves for the event.
