PHILADELPHIA.
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28.
A French paper contains the following remark :—' We have not a single ally; or, to speak more truly, the people of every country are our allies, but the governments are our enemies.'
A correspondent observes, that the above observation applies with peculiar propriety and truth to this country. We find at least some of the principal officers of our government not only waging war against the principles of the French revolution by words and deeds, but are endeavouring to stir up the people to an opposition by calumniating the minister, and sowing the seeds of distrust and jealousy—Witness the monarchical Pacificus, and the insidious No-Jacobin, and others—the work of one pen. Let it be asked whether the public gives 3500 dollars per year to an officer to employ part of his time in vilifying republicans, and spreading the tares of aristocracy and monarchy in a country which has in all probability sheltered him from poverty and insignificance.
