Highway Truck Spills Load of Prisoners Returning From Day's Work on The Roads.
The letting down of the side wall of a collapsible highway truck took the life of G. I. Steppe, 60, of Old Fort, and injured five young men, prisoners from the camp south of Marion. Steppe was a guard.
Men injured are E. L. Johnson, 30, Murphy; James Caviness, 24, Greensboro; Clarence Evans, 20, Asheville; Marvin Kimmer, 21, Salisbury; Bradley Murphy, 23, Ashe county.
None was seriously injured, it was said at the hospital.
The accident occurred about six o'clock Tuesday afternoon, as the men were returning from work. The truck, driven by Charles Kincaid, of Nebo, ran into the curb on the sharp curve of Morgan street at the junction with South Main. The force of the impact evidently jarred loose the fastenings of the body wall on the right side, which fell away and threw the men to the concrete pavement.
Steppe's head was crushed, causing instant death. The others, all prisoners on the gang quartered at the McDowell camp, were cut, bruised and sprained. Only two required hospital treatment beyond emergency aid given at Marion Hospital where they were rushed as soon as the accident became known.
