Peter De Noyelle, well known for many years as a representative of his district in the Congress of the United States, aged sixty years, had been suffering since February last, with a disease of the lower jaw bone, which compelled him, after submitting in vain to medical treatment in the neighborhood of his residence, at Haverstraw, to come to this city in pursuit of professional advice. After a consultation with several of our distinguished surgeons, and they all concurring in the necessity of the immediate removal of the jaw, the old gentleman consented to submit, and Dr. Reese having been chosen by him as the operator, performed it on the 4th ultimo, removing the jaw from beyond the chin to the angle, and this with the tumor weighed 7 3/4 ounces.
On the 1st of May, instant, 26 days after the operation, the Judge returned home, entirely free from the disease, the whole wound having healed, and having no deformity in the face, and suffering no other inconvenience, than being obliged to confine himself altogether to fluids for nourishment, from which, however, he suffers but little privation. A letter from Dr. Cornelison, his family physician, says "the operation performed by Dr. Reese, on the 4th ult., has completely succeeded; and that too, with a rapidity, perhaps, unexpected, and, certainly, unparalleled in the annals of modern surgery." This great operation of amputation of the lower jaw, was first attempted in New York, a few years since, by Dr. Valentine Mott, and with success. The merit of originality is therefore due to our city; and we rejoice that Dr. Reese has given the surgical world another example of success in this difficult operation.
