SHOULD GET CHAUTAUQUA.
The Commercial has urged the importance of the Redpath Chautauqua here this summer. It may be too late, but perhaps it would be worth while if the Chamber of Commerce would get busy they might book them for this city some time during the summer. The Birmingham News of Monday had the following complimentary article:
"In 1913 the Birmingham Chautauqua Board was responsible for a really notable affair when it arranged with the Redpath Lyceum Bureau for a Chautauqua in Birmingham. The affair was held in East Park, near the Birmingham High School, and for a week the people enjoyed a form of entertainment that was delightful. The lectures were inspiring, as well as enlightening, and the other features were of the highest class. Thousands enjoyed the affair, and it resulted in a unanimous demand on the part of the patrons for another entertainment of like character in 1914.
"In response to this demand, the Birmingham Chautauqua Board has arranged another entertainment for this year, and it is close at hand. Beginning on May 21, and running until May 27, a Chautauqua will be presented in East Park, the program including addresses by noted lecturers, numerous musical features of exceptional merit, and other attractions of general interest. In addition to the elaborate preparations made for the entertainment and edification of the adult patrons of the Chautauqua, special care has been taken to provide for the children, and they will find the features arranged for their pleasure to be full of interest.
"The tremendous grip that the Chautauqua has upon the minds of the people of America is not due to the fact that the Chautauqua offers entertainment of a delightful character. The cause goes deeper. The Chautauqua grips because it helps. It uplifts and inspires while it entertains, and this is why it has such a hold upon the people.
"That this form of entertainment has become a fixture in Birmingham should be a source of gratification to the people, not only because of the delightful hours of entertainment it affords, but because of its value in the general uplift. The coming Chautauqua should be generously supported."
