Full Text

The editor of the Willimantic (Conn.) Gazette, after copying some extracts from the communication of "Homo Sum," published in the Star a few weeks since; makes the following remarks:

We think that Homo Sum presumes a little too far in accusing those editors who published accounts of the unhappy event at Tiverton, of doing so in order to "make their publications sought for, and thus reap a pecuniary advantage from an opportunity so favorable." We very much doubt that any such motive actuated an individual in the columns of whose paper the deed was recorded. They, (if we judge from ourself,) believed it their duty to make known to the world the existence of such reports; (where they had as good foundation as those in question) as caterers of the events of the day,--and not one of whom but would be as ready to assert the innocence of Mr. Avery as to promulgate the evidence of his guilt.

Homo, when he points out to us the words of Christ "what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again" should beware how he accuses his brethren of a design to injure the character or to "jeopardize the life" of his fellow man or the paltry addition of a few pence--and should notice at the same time, another precept of the divine teacher,--"Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye."
