Fire. The alarm of fire was given in this place about 11 o'clock on Saturday last, which proved to be in the stable of Miss Martha Richards, from which the flames communicated to the stabling of the Globe and Eagle tavern kept by Michael Hill, and from thence to the stable of Mr. Daugherty, all of which were soon reduced to ashes, with their contents, consisting of hay, oats in the straw, &c. Through the indefatigable exertions of the citizens, the progress of the flames were here stopped, though many houses were on fire at different times, and in different parts of the town at a very considerable distance from where the fire originated—the wind being high at the time blew the cinders so as to jeopardise the greater part of the south end of the village, and we deem it a most fortunate circumstance that the town was supplied with a Fire Engine. We cannot dismiss this subject without noticing the meritorious and praiseworthy exertions of the Females, whose efforts to extinguish the flames by carrying water were extremely arduous. Whether this fire was occasioned by accident, or the work of an incendiary, we have not been able to ascertain.—Monitor.
