Two Geologists Arrive Here to Commence Extensive Survey
Here to commence a complete geologic study of the entire Juneau Gold Belt, the first in some decades, are two Geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey: W. S. Twenhofel and Francis A. Stejer, who have just arrived from Washington. D. C.
Here awaiting them for the past three weeks was Walter Seelig. Topographical Engineer for the Geological Survey. who will work independently in conjunction with Twenhofel and Stejer on a new topographic map of the Juneau area. Local helpers will be employed by both sections of the party to accomplish their tremendous assignments.
Twenhofel revealed that he and Stejer expect to get going on their geological examinations in about one week. while Seelig already is set to begin his task. Hardly more than a start can be made on the geologic survey this summer, Twenhofel advised, as the region to be examined is huge, extending from Sumdum to Berner's Bay.
More than one summer also will be required to complete Seelig's mapping job.
Twenhofel indicated that his group will likely commence its task in the immediate vicinity of Juneau, where the most extensive mine workings exist and there are greater surface showings. The examination will be made both on the ground and underground.
A geological re-examination of the Juneau Gold Belt has long been a goal of the Juneau Chamber of Commerce and of others interested in mining development hereabouts. Actual commencement of work upon it this summer will be a consummation of efforts reaching back over several years.
