Manager White Offering Water to All Before Winter Sets In.
Manager E. A. White, of the Alturas Water Company, has been busy the past week, canvassing the city for subscribers to the water system, giving estimates on the cost of putting in connections, where, and how to make the same, etc. He has been very successful so far, nearly everybody with whom he has talked having concluded to put in water pipes at once, and quit using the seepage water from the wells, especially below town, as it is undoubtedly impregnated with the drainage of the city, and unhealthy. The object of the company is, to get all the subscribers who want water this winter at once, so the connections can be made before cold weather sets in, as the cost will not be so great, and they are not so liable to freeze. People who are now using ditch water should make some other preparations at once, as the supply from that source is not apt to last but a few weeks longer at most. One hard frost will freeze the ditches solid, and no more water can be had from them until late in the spring. Last winter the ditches could easily have been kept open, as the snow was so deep they did not freeze hard; but this winter, it is expected, the snowfall will not be very heavy, and the earth will freeze to a depth of several feet.
