CONGRATULATION.
The good citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, are congratulated that their Elections for the year 1812, are passed—and blessed be God, they have terminated mostly in the choice of Washingtonians.
Frequent elections become irksome to us all; and when it becomes necessary to make active exertions, that suitable men be placed in power, our duty is rendered doubly important—but not so painful as to be ruled by demagogues.
In order that our next year's elections may be accomplished with equal success, and with less labour and exertion, it is necessary that every man continue his best endeavors to suppress all foreign influence, by circulating correct information; and that we do not become a prey to the intrigues of the wicked, and designs of the ambitious.
As a writer has very justly observed upon the work of regeneration which has commenced in this, and most of the states in the Union—“It is not the accidental victory of party, nor the transient effect of distressing laws. It arises from a sober inquiry, of discrimination between boisterous pretenders of patriotism, and tried friends of the people.”
The General Administration continue, with the most unwearied industry, to inculcate the belief that France has repealed her Berlin and Milan Decrees; and the majority in Congress, (which we are thankful to see begin to diminish) display extreme feasibility when any one has the audacity to suggest his belief to the contrary.
War with England, we are yet told is inevitable—and the ablest Members of Congress are summoned anew to declare it; and he that opposes the measure, is threatened by the war hawks with the white rope! Will New-England submit to all these insults and outrages? The answer is no!—and if not made known to our present rulers, before the next session, they may then expect to experience the indignation of an injured, affronted people.
