G. Ortego was locked up at police headquarters late yesterday pending an investigation. According to information furnished the police the man had attempted to break open a money box in St. Mary's church.
Ortego has been turned over to the county authorities and the matter will be taken up by the district attorney's office for investigation.
A cement worker, doing repair work in the church, said that he had been watching the man for some time, noting his peculiar actions, and that Ortego was apparently trying to open the money box with a rasp which he held in his hand. He was waiting for the man to break it open before he interfered.
In the meantime Father O'Farrell happened to walk into the church and found the man at work. He immediately questioned him relative to his actions and the cement worker gave the information of his vigil to the priest. A call was sent to headquarters and the man was locked up.
Ortego claimed that he was putting some money in the box at the time and said that he had just happened to pick up the rasp which he believed belonged to some workman. The cement worker, however, looked at the rasp and noting its rusty condition declared that no good workman would use such a tool.
