Full Text

Oh, The Charlottesville Republican seems to think the Whigs are very cruel towards Mr. Rives, because they talk of voting for a Whig Senator in preference to that gentleman! Does the Charlottesville paper really think that there is any thing very strange in this? Is it remarkable that the Whigs should prefer one of their own party to Mr. Rives? What claims, indeed, has Mr. R. upon the Whig, is a query? Certainly we know of none. Nor is there any inconsistency, as the Charlottesville paper seems to suppose, in voting against Mr. Rives as Senator next winter, even though a portion of those who advocate that policy disapproved of the severe remarks of the Richmond Whig in reference to that gentleman, a few months ago—We thank Mr. Rives for his opposition to the Sub Treasury bill: but we cannot forget that he is an Expunger. That is an offence never to be forgiven, but upon repentance and recantation.
