was declared the official reporter of the
Senate, at twelve dollars per day. The
bill for the relief of Hiram Welsh, Assessor
of Humboldt county, was "passed
over the Governor's veto" by an unanimous
vote. That lets the Governor out
on that point. There was, of course, a
great deal of "talk" about other bills and
resolutions, but as we have not four columns
to spare, we cannot furnish our
readers with the luxury of reading that
which costs them so heavily in the shape
of taxation. In Assembly, the high crimes
and misdemeanors of Wm. M. Gillespie,
the reporter of the Enterprise, were brought
before the House in the shape of a resolution
for his expulsion. There was a hot
harangue on this resolution. "Bien"
said he had been abused by the Gold Hill
News, and the House had not only
refused to consider itself insulted thereby,
but that the Speaker had actually "took
a little somethin" with Lynch, immediately
thereafter. After such a precedent he thought the freedom of the press
should not be curtailed. The House said
"Tres Bien" and the resolution was lost.
Tozer then declared that he would take it
out of Gillespie's hide, or words to that
effect.
"He rights his wrongs wherever given
Were it in the courts of Heaven-
or any other man."
Senate bill—"An Act concerning courts
of justice and judicial officers," was concurred in.
Senate messages were received, transmitting the following: concurring in resolution which rescinds joint, or concurrent
resolutions, providing that the Judiciary Committee of the Senate and Assembly act
together. Also, Senate Bill No. 70, "An
Act to secure persons and animals from
danger arising from mining and other excavations. The rules were suspended,
bill read first and second time and referred
to Committee on Mines and Mining
Interests. Also, Assembly Bill No. 23,
"An Act to tax and regulate Foreign Insurance
Companies."
The question recurring on the Senate
amendments to said bill, they were concurred in. Ayes 23, noes 4.
Also, Senate Bill No. 33, "An Act relating to Marriage and Divorce," which
this day passed the Senate notwithstanding the objections of the Governor.
The Governor's message transmitting
veto of said bill was read.
Mr. Parker said that the Governor had
seen fit to send in his fifth veto. His objection to this bill was, because the subject was not properly expressed in the
title. He considered the objection was
not valid, and read an extract from the
statutes to prove it.
The question recurring on the passage
of the bill, notwithstanding the objection
of the Governor, it was finally passed by
a vote of 26 to 5. Away went the Governor
again.
Cutter introduced a resolution calling
for another Constitutional Convention!!
We suppose the object to be to abolish
Governor Blasdel. The resolution was
made the special order for Monday
evening.
