Full Text

Some time in the year 1798, Mr. Charles Barker, son of Mr. Stephen Barker, of the city of Norwich in Connecticut, sailed from New-York in the armed sch'r Galiot, capt. Hudson, on a voyage up the Straits of Gibraltar. Soon after sailing, the sch'r upset in a squall, and the people were taken off the wreck by a brig from New-York to Cadiz. On arriving off Cadiz, the port was blockaded by a squadron of English men of war, one of which (the Edgar, 74) brought the brig too, and forcibly detained the whole of the shipwrecked seamen, capt. H. only excepted. The following is an extract of a letter lately received from Mr. Barker, dated

Edgar, off Bornholm, June 8, 1801.

"I have been deprived of the happiness of writing for a considerable time; and you will receive this only by mere chance. We are now cruising in the Baltic. Our ship lost 133 men killed and wounded, at the battle of Copenhagen; though I have escaped, thank heaven, unhurt. I have wrote several letters to you; but have never received any. It would do me a very great piece of service, if you would get a protection and send it in a letter. It might be the means of clearing me from a British man of war."
