Captain Ross of his Majesty's ship Roebuck, of 44 guns, just arrived, gives the following account,
September 25
He fell in within twelve sail of French line of battle ships six leagues east of Tybee. He saw an English man of war of two decks, under jury masts engaged within eighty gun ship, to which he struck, after engaging thirty five minutes. Captain Ross took one of the French store ships, by which he was informed, that the French fleet had lost all their anchors and cables off St. Augustine, that they were obliged to put to sea in a hard gale of wind, which carried away the masts and bowsprit of twelve sail of the line, and separated them from the Count, which he ordered to the Chesapeake. Two of the line, six frigates, and a number of merchantmen left him at the same time, some of them for the Chesapeake, some for Boston, and some for Europe.
The three ships met by the Bonetta brig, must have been of these twelve, because their logbooks mentioned the capture of the Experiment.
