LOCAL COMMITTEE POINTS OUT FIVE NEEDS OF COUNTY EDUCATIONAL SET-UP IN REPORT TO STATE DEPARTMENT

After several months of intensive study of the problems of educational facilities in Hernando county, a local Citizens Committee on Education made public its recommendations to the State Committee at Tallahassee this week.

The group put forth five important needs and changes that have become increasingly evident as the study of local conditions progressed. They are as follows:

1. More money is needed for operation of the schools and millages increased in the General School Fund and also in the Special Tax School Districts.

2. All School Districts should be abolished and the county operated as one School Unit.

3. The County Superintendent of Public Instruction should be appointed by the State Department of Education and definite standards of education should be required for the office.

4. Hernando County should own and operate its school buses.

5. The State should make appropriation for Capital Outlay in the different counties.

During the course of its study, the committee discussed phases of administration, finance, and instruction in the Hernando county schools. Special emphasis was placed upon such subjects as County Resources, School Attendance, Transportation, Educational Organization and Administration, Physical Education, School Government, Religious Education in Relation to the Public Schools, and other pertinent problems.

The five recommended changes were set forth in a report to the State Committee signed by Mrs. Carl Bean, Homer L. Jones, Chas. Ashbrook, George Allen, I. B. Turnley and Mrs. U. R. Barnett who are members of the Hernando County Committee on Education which was appointed several months ago by the County Superintendent and the General County Supervisor of County Schools to study local school problems.

The study was part of a state-wide plan in which the situation in regard to schools in each county was studied and recommendations made to the state office. These reports will be studied by department officials in Tallahassee and future changes will be based upon the recommendations.
