WILLIAMS COLLEGE.
The Commencement at Williams College took place on the 15th. The day was fine and the exercises unusually interesting. The pieces, generally reflected much honor both on the speakers and their instructors. The orations, on "Uniformity as exhibited in Matter and Mind," and the "Influence of Christianity upon Poetry," were especially worthy of commendation; as well as those on the "Magna Charta," "Free Trade System." and "Man his own Teacher"--exhibiting, as they did, the talents of the orators, both as speakers and writers. The oration before the Alumni, was delivered by the Rev. Orville Dewey. It was a splendid specimen of sound sense and argument, expressed in a beautiful style. It was listened to with the greatest attention by a crowded house, and not only sustained his previous reputation as being among our first writers. but rather added new laurels to his fame.
The degree of A. B. was conferred on 23 young men; that of A. M. on 8.
The prospects of the institution were never more promising than at the present time, under the direction of a talented and popular faculty. It is rapidly increasing. The three higher classes contain over one hundred students, and an unusually large number have entered the coming Freshmen class.
