NEW YORK CITY- (CNS)- If Una Mae Carlisle would only smile -what a lovely girl she'd be . . . That seemed to be what public opinion thought of Una Mae at the Ebony Club on Broadway when she came out in a lovely white gown- all frowned up! . . . She sat down to the piano and frowned . . . The electric cords were tangled . .. She didn't wait for help she almost pushed the piano over trying to straighten them out . . . The bandleader came over and in a second, fixed it . . . Una Mae looks up, frowning. The spotlight was on her all the while and we couldn't help but wonder when she would smile . . . Then suddenly, it came, like the bolt from the blue, she sang a nondescript song with "Baby" in it and when she reached the bass solo she looked around her and smiled . . . Then she seemed to get happier when she announced she'd do some originals . . . "I See A Million People" brought on animated gestures as she lively tossed her bobbed red hair . . . Though the mike was on her right side and we were sitting at the first table to her left, we couldn't see her face except when she accidentally turned around . .. The piano was at such an angle that the mike should've been in the front, to please all the people . . . However, Una Mae went into "Walking By The River" in which she closed her eyes and went dreamy on us . . . Though we found her actual talents as a pianist quite limited to just picking out melody and putting a simple bass to it, we do harbor a great amount of respect for Una Mae's originals and wish she would pen a ballard to make the Hit Parade today . . . But as we thought of it. Miss Carlisle, finished her numbers, seemed to make a mad dash of the stage thanking her audience with half-smiles and half bows . . . And we concluded again, if she would only let herself be as genuine on stage as she is in private life ..
