PROGRESS IN VALLEY
GOODWILL
In the last six months Imperial Valley has made real progress in one definite direction. This is the rapid elimination of inter-community hatred and unreasoning antipathy.
It has been standard that the valley's largest cities, Calexico, Brawley and El Centro couldn't get along together and opposed each other openly and covertly on just about everything. Calexico and Brawley have believed that El Centro was trying to steal all their business. And El Centro apparently believed that Calexico and Brawley were trying to get only what selfishly benefitted them.
All in all, this conflict between communities probably has robbed the valley of millions of dollars worth of benefits. In competition with other counties or areas, competitors each presented united fronts, while Imperial Valley was almost invariably represented by a group fighting among itself, each undermining the other.
That scene is rapidly changing. More and more evident is the rule becoming that all chambers of commerce unite to attain whatever will help the valley. By helping the valley, every community will be benefitted, one way or another. This cooperation has been witnessed on many sides, and in many activities. And it is worthy of comment that as a result, each chamber is building more intelligent programs and more interest is being shown by the membership.
We congratulate the presidents of those clubs which are helping in this program, notably Fern Young of Calexico, "Bill Wilke, Brawley, and John Donahue of El Centro. Credit also goes to the secretaries, Frank Reynolds of Calexico, Charles Nice, Brawley and Bob Hays, El Centro. And there are many others who, in this new found unity of effort, are finding more hope of improving the lot of the valley, and giving their time and efforts to that end.
