OCCASIONAL ODE,
For Fast Day, sung at Wrentham,
April 3, 1800.
COLUMBIANS, join to worship God!
Whose mercies never fail;
Revere his everlasting word;
His boundless goodness hail!
With humble hopes, O richly blest,
With blessings from above;
The chaste effusions of your breast,
Be gratitude and love.
This solemn day supremely prize!
Life's better joys impart;
Relieve the friendless orphan's cries,
And heal the widow's heart.
Alleviate thy brother's wants;
The cheerless hungry feed;
The naked clothe: what heaven grants,
Give those who stand in need.
The prison's massy doors unbar;
Loose, loose the captive!--go,
Wipe from affliction's eye the tear;
And feel another's woe!
Put on humiliation's robe,
Be humble and adore;
Extend his praise throughout the globe.
Who lives a GOD with power.
See nature's varied, vernal bloom,
How goodness flows abroad!
Reflect on life!--Behold the tomb!
Be wise!--and serve your God!
