For the Worcester Daily Spy,
Glen-Cottage by Moonlight; Or, Things I Love:
At the quiet hour of evening:
Neath the brow of Glen-Cot hill,
Let me wander in the moonlight,
With my sister by the rill;
By the rill that murmurs gently,
Just below the cottage door,
Where oft I rambled with her
In the hallowed days of yore.
Oh! I love to rove by moonlight,
In that pleasant Glen-Cot grove,
For there I heard the whisperings
Of a sister's early love;
But she's far away from home now,
And I miss the gentle word,
Which to me was as sweet music,
And so oft my soul it stirr'd.
And I love the silvery moonlight
Spreading softly o'er the wave,
Or the murmuring of bright streamlets,
There my heated brow to lave:
Or to watch the surge of ocean,
Rushing madly to the shore,
There's grandeur in its foaming,
And there's music in its roar.
And I love the hour of twilight,
Stealing gently o'er the lea,
When the day-birds cease their warbling.
Nor is heard the hum of bee;
At this holy hour of evening,
Let me shun the busy throng,
And go meditate in silence,
Or list the night-bird's plaintive song:
There are things that charm me ever,
When the day-god sinks to rest,
And the lengthening shades of evening
Come, slow gliding from the west:
'Tis to watch the clouds at sunset
Tinged with purple and with gold,
And the star-gems set in midnight,
Or old Luna's beams unfold.
