Three Held After Running Gun Fight

Three men were being held in the Cumberland County jail today after a wild ride in which they exchanged bullets with two members of the State Highway Patrol.

Patrolman Paul Albergine, stationed at Coats, driving the patrol car said neither vehicle was hit.

He said, however, that a bullet "came within three inches of my head" before the chase began.

Charles Sherwood Fish, 34, of Spring Lake, Route 1, driver of the car that reached speeds up to 90 miles an hour before stopped by a patrol road block in Cumberland County, has been charged with assaulting an officer, drunken driving and careless and reckless driving.

Riding with Fish were Walter Matthews, Jr., 25 of Coats, Route 1, and Herbert Columbus Gregory 37 of Coats, Route 1, who have been charged with assaulting an officer.

Patrolman Albergine, who had as his companion, Patrolman W. O Grady of Erwin, said he had gone to the John Sorrells place just inside the Harnett County line to make an arrest when he was fired upon.

"I think all of them were shooting at me," the officer declared "and the bullet just missed my head."

He said he gave chase immediately to the 1951 Plymouth in which the men were riding and chased them 25 miles before they

were finally halted.

He said that he exhausted two full rounds of bullets from his pistol in returning fire of the trio. He said they were using a U. S. Army carbine rifle and also a .22 calibre automatic rifle. After the trio were stopped, two boxes of bullets were found in the automobile.

Albergine said he radioed ahead after the men crossed the Cumberland County line and other members of the State Highway Patrol proceeded to the road on which the men were travelling and finally forced Fish to pull over to the side of the road. He said at least four other patrol cars assisted in stopping the men.

Because of the amount of bullets exchanged between the patrol car and the vehicle being chased, Albergine said all involved were lucky that no one was injured.

He said that neither of the vehicles was hit by the bullets. He explained the trio being chased fired from the doors of the vehicle.

After the trio were placed under arrest, they were brought to Fayetteville. The chase began on a dirt road.
