STOLE THE DOOR KNOBS.
Three Trinity College Students Expelled From the Institution.

Hartford, Nov 15.—Three graduate students have been summarily retired from Trinity college for committing depredations on the college property.

The men dismissed are: Harry Hamilton Cochrane of Newington Junction, Walter Alfred Mitchell and Victor Forrest Morgan of this city.

Mitchell lives at 72 Vernon street and Morgan resides at 227 Sigourney street.

The offense for which the men were thus dealt with is a unique as well as in some respects a rather amusing one, and does not reflect upon the characters of those involved as some such cases do.

It appears that of late many knobs have been missing from the doors of the main building at Trinity.

The knobs are of brass and bear the crest of the institution.

The matter reached the ears of the faculty, and an investigation was begun.

The janitor made a tour of the building, and, much to the amusement of the student body, took an inventory of the door knobs, a considerable number of which could not be accounted for.

The janitor reported the exact state of affairs to the college authorities, who decided that immediate action should be taken.

Suspicion was attracted toward Cochrane, Mitchell and Morgan, who were served with a written notice, instructing them to appear before the faculty Wednesday afternoon.

The men did not appear, however, and the faculty, after a lengthy session, during which the case was thoroughly discussed, concluded to retire the wrongdoers.

Yesterday noon each of the latter received a notice, signed by President Smith, in the name of the faculty, notifying them that they must withdraw from the college at once.

The retired students contemplate submitting a petition to the faculty, asking that the case be reconsidered, and that they be afforded an opportunity to present a defense.

They claim that they did not receive notification to appear at the meeting of the faculty on Wednesday afternoon until too late.

The three men were taking graduate courses in physical science at the college.

Cochrane and Mitchell were members of the class of 1901, while Morgan graduated in 1899.

Cochrane lived at 105 Jarvis hall.

The fad of wearing the Trinity crest as a fob bade fair to become very popular until it was sharply checked by the retiring of three of the offenders.

Some of the students had promised to give the coveted crests to their young lady friends, but now these rash promises will probably remain unfulfilled.
