Hartsfield Trails In Second Place With 74

ROSLIN, L. I.,-(SNS)-Howard Wheeler, former Atlantan who now resides in Philadelphia, and national open champion of the United Golfers Association fired a (three over-par), 73 to lead the professional field in the first round of the Ray Robinson Open Golf Tournament played Tuesday, over the Engineers Golf Club lay-out.

Wheeler, who broke into the national spotlight back in 1933, while a member of the New Lincoln Golf and Country Club, Atlanta, Georgia, launched the 72-hole grind by putting together a 39 and 34 After getting off to a bad start with a six on the first hole and five on the second, the national open champion settled down and played par golf the remainder of the way

ZEKE HARTSFIELD POSTS SPARKLING 74

In second place was Zeke Hartsfield of the New Lincoln Golf and Country Club, Atlanta, who posted a sparkling 74 The crack Atlanta professional chalked up a 37 on the first nine and came home in identical figures

In the amateur championship, Alfred "I up' Holmes, another former Atlantan, now a resident of Detroit won his first round match by defeating Stephen Lucas, 3-2. and Eural Clark, the low medalist of Los Angeles breezed through with a 3-2 victory over Earl Flora. Clark was 2-up at the turn and played steady golf all the way to take the match in stride

CHANDLER WINS

Clarence Chandler, former club and city champion at the New Lincoln Club, Atlanta, who presently resides in Chicago also won his opening match, beating Herman Dubois, 2-1
