Full Text
It is gratifying to see with what demonstrations of respect President Fillmore has been received and entertained all along the route of his tour. Wherever he has been the people were out by thousands, and they received him in that cordial manner which testifies strongly to his worth as a man and to his popularity as the Chief Magistrate of this powerful nation. By this visit, thousands have had an opportunity to see and shake hands with the President, who before knew nothing of him personally and had formed their opinions of him entirely from what they had heard through others, or what they had read in the newspapers of the day. We believe that all have been pleased with the appearance of the man, and, certainly, all who have been favored with an introduction to him, have found him a most unassuming, practical and sound man. He is entirely at his ease, and the even temper of his character is never disturbed on any occasion. All his extempore speeches are admirably adapted to the occasions when made, and are conceived and delivered in the most felicitous manner. How striking the contrast between the President of the United States moving promiscuously around among the people, without any body-guard or gorgeous display of military power to protect him—and the movements of Kings, Monarchs and the mock President of the pretended Republic of France. There the heads of Governments are afraid to move among their subjects, unless most strongly guarded by a large military power, for fear of assassination. But here, the President moves all about among the people, wherever he has a fancy to go, and he is everywhere received with the warmest congratulations and tokens of respect and attachment by the people.
Such is the difference between the Governments, and the men who rule the people of the earth.
