WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Sen. Ernest Gruening suggested Tuesday what he termed a modest public works program. Its price tag: $2,645,000,000.
The Alaska said he would offer an amendment to the emergency public works bill to raise that figure in the $600 million authorization the measure now proposes.
His figure was arrived at, Gruening said, by adding to the $600 million "an amount equal to the monies appropriated for foreign economic assistance in fiscal year 1963."
Gruening said he did not see how Congress could take care of unemployment abroad without first taking care of the unemployed at home.
