CONGRESS ADJOURNS AFTER HISTORIC SESSION
40 MODERN LEGISLATION
CONGRESS ADJOURNS AFTER MORE THAN YEAR SESSION
By The Associated Press
WASHINGTON, June 19, Congress finally adjourned Monday night.
A party of independents took control of the closing hours of the session by furthering a program of passing excess legislation which consisted of railway labor disputes and the adjustment act, which President Roosevelt had previously indicated might go over until the next session.
Congress' slow progress with the conferees of the Housing Bill gave the independents time to force through the Railway Bill.
The end of the session came quickly after the railway bill had passed.
The adoption of the conference report on the administration's housing bill took place almost as the last measure.
The House adjourned at 11:45 Pm. Eastern Standard Time, June 18 and the Senate took similar action a short time after.
Officially the Congress which concluded work Monday night, began its session five days after the inauguration of President Roosevelt.
It was called into special session in order to deal with the banking crisis. and since then has enacted laws vitally affecting the economic life of the nation.
This congress made a beginning on the extension of social reforms for which the President has asked action on for the next session.
The session now concluded enacted striking measures which altered the banking and currency systems brought forth the National Recovery Administration: placed under government control, the stock exchanges: and took over the country's communications systems.
In short the Seventy-third Congress gave statutory validity to the New Deal.
President Roosevelt applauded the accomplishments of this session on Congress. in a letter which expressed the spirit of deep satisfaction at the co-operation between the legislative and executive branches of the government, to which he attributed the success of. the session.
With this session now passing into history. no mention was made of federal appointments for Alaska. particularly in the Second Division. One or two other. divisions still have republican office holders with names which should have--come before Congress.-but nothing has been done ' in regard to them yet.
