IN THE SECOND year of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Athletic and Recreation Association, seven major activities are planned which will result in National Tournaments to determine the top teams or individual of various sports and activities within the V.F.W. organization.
The Basketball Tournament promises to be greater in 1948 than in the past year. The interest in the sport has grown and many more posts have planned to enter teams in local leagues and tournaments with expectations of entering the department tournament. In 1947 nineteen department championship teams were entered in the National Basketball Tournament at Omaha, Nebraska. It is expected that there will be twenty-five to thirty state championship teams entered in the National pairing in 1948, including the Department of Washington. Tentatively the 1948 tourney is planned to be held at Anderson, Indiana, from March 2 through 6.

He'll Be Busy
THE NATIONAL Postal Bowling Tournament will be the first event of the coming season. Competing V.F.W. Keglers will take to the alleys during the week of December 14th to roll scores in their own home towns to compete for the National Title. There will also be a National Open Bowling Tournament held during the month of April for all V.F.W. bowling teams within the United States. The tentative site for the National Open Bowling Tournament is St. Paul, Minnesota. The dates: April 28th through May 2nd.
The National Senior Softball Tournament will again be held in 1948, with the defending champions of the 1947 tournament, V.F.W. Post No. 3363, Columbus, Ohio, on hand to uphold their title. The Buckeyes will face a tough schedule as competition will be far greater in the 1948 tournament. Tentatively the tournament is planned to be held at Austin, Texas, August 11th through 15th.
The first National Baseball Tournament will be held during the 1948 season and the Department baseball champions from all over the United States will be paired off. Many departments have been hoping that a National Baseball Tournament would be held, and now that the plans are set up for the event, it is expected that the entry list will be extremely large in the first year of National competition. Tentatively the tournament is set up to take place at the newly dedicated baseball field at Sikeston, Missouri, August 25th and through 29th.
THE YOUTH Programs for the 1948 season are the same that were held during 1947 program, with the National Marble Tournament being the first to result in a national event. Last year thirty-seven departments were represented (Jackie Valley of Shelton represented Washington) and this coming year plans are afoot to take care of fifty-two entries-all forty-eight states, Washington, D.C., Department of Hawaii, Department of Alaska and the Canal Zone. The '47 meet was a great success, and it is hoped that national celebrities and movie stars will attend the 1948 tournament. Father Flanagan's Boys' Town is again the tentative site for the 1948 event to be held June 24th and 25th.
The National Youth Softball Tournament will be one of the outstanding youth events in the country in 1948. In 1947 one thousand and thirty-four boys were in an active part of the National Tournament which brought nation-wide interest. The plans for the 1948 tournament are being set up to handle double the entries of the 1947 event. Little Rock, Arkansas, is the probable site for the Youth Tournament to be held July 21-25.
The tentative dates and places of the tournaments give all the members of the V.F.W. the knowledge of the plans, and a chance to get the ball rolling in their posts to have a team fielded in all events in hope of winning a National Title. The trophies will be beautiful for all the winning teams and the tournament promises to be the biggest ever, which means that T. David Gnagey of Spokane and Ralph Dever of Aberdeen, the director of Junior Activities and Athletics and state athletic officer, respectively, will have plenty to do.
