Result of Greenback Practice.—Some youthful partisans at the recent Congressional Nominating Convention in this city gave a graphic illustration of the tendency of the greenback theory. One gay and festive politician said to another: "Are you in favor of greenbacks?" "Yes, sir," was the reply. The dialogue continued: "Will you inflate?" "Certainly"; and the two went out with locked arms in most genial concord. By-and-by they returned with emotional irregularity of movement. It was not long before there was a repetition of the dialogue, and the withdrawal to "inflate." It was not necessary to proceed beyond the third "inflation" to put an end to the "practice," if not the "theory," of inflation. The greenbackers, rendered incapable of further inflation, as well as of attending to business, sought a corner and relapsed into the collapse of repletion and partisan insensibility. The last stage of those inflationists was worse than the first. And just what was seen in the cases of these individuals would be the end of "inflation" by the wholesale: general repletion and paralysis.
