From the Day, of January 18, 1810, an
English opposition paper.
THE SECRET CAUSE
Respecting the late outcry that has put
an end to the negotiation between Mr. Jackson and the government of the United
States, a circumstance has been disclosed
of an interesting nature. It will be recollected, that a few years back, Mr. Drake,
then his Majesty's Envoy to the Prussian
Court, was accused by Bonaparte of heading
a conspiracy to take away his life, and
Mr. Jackson was pointed at by him as an
accomplice. The circumstance produced
at the time, a severe remonstrance from
Napoleon, who publickly declared, that
from that period, no minister from France
should reside at any Court in Europe with
either Mr. Drake or Mr. Jackson. The
latest accounts from America inform us,
that on the landing of Mr. Jackson on the
shores of the United States, the French
minister, Turreau, reminded the government
of his master's determination, and of
the necessity which still existed of his
taking leave, should Mr. Jackson be permitted
to remain as the accredited British
minister. Turreau's remonstrance was attended to, but the American government
chose its own method of shewing its acquiescence
to the will of France. Unwilling to deny admittance to Mr. Jackson,
before they had heard the proposition
which he had to make from the British
government, they took the first opportunity of
treating him in so insulting a manner as to
disgust, and induce him to return to England in a way that would better answer
the end proposed by the Court of France.
This is said to be the true and primary
cause which led the American government
so unexpectedly, and without a substantial
reason, to break off further communication
with Mr. Jackson.

Event Details

A few years back, Mr. Drake and Mr. Jackson were accused by Bonaparte of conspiring against his life, leading to Napoleon's declaration that no French minister would reside at any European court with them. Upon Mr. Jackson's arrival in the United States as British minister, French minister Turreau reminded the US government of this, insisting he must leave if Jackson remained. The US government acquiesced by insulting Jackson to prompt his departure, thus ending negotiations without admitting him fully.
