WOULD FIGHT WITH ALLIES
Prospectors Mush Over Frozen Trails Hundreds of Miles to Join Company Raised by Commissioner Black, of Yukon.
Alaska wants to be represented in the company which Commissioner George Black of Yukon is to raise soon to help fight the battles of Britain and the allies, says a recent issue of the Dawson News. A large number of Alaskans have gone forward to join the allies; and no doubt many more will go. A large number left Juneau several months ago, as many as twenty-three at one time. Some mushed out over the trail from Fairbanks and other places.
And still they come. Administrator George N. Williams has received a telegram from a man in Iditarod, asking if he and others can join the contingent. The administrator promptly replied by night letter informing the inquirer that no doubt there would be opportunity to get on, and suggesting that the Iditarod boys come to Dawson by the first boats in the spring. For them to mush over the present winter trail would mean a tramp of nearly 1500 miles and heavy expense, and the trails probably would be far gone by the time they neared the end, and little time be saved over coming by boat.
It is understood quite a number of men in this district who have not enlisted are awaiting the definite terms of enlistment as they want to work in the meantime.
