A FRAGMENT

Euphorbus was a father. That is, he was affectionate to his family and benevolent to mankind. Euphorbus and Lois were indissolubly one. Their authority among their children was not on their backs, but in their hearts. What was the life of Euphorbus? His tenderness and philanthropy were, like the mountain Oak, deep rooted. Like that, he repelled, with dignity, the storms and the tempests ; and like that, he was distinguished for beauty and majesty of appearance. His children having experienced genuine love and kindness, returned them, reciprocally, to their parents. One chain bound them altogether. What was his End? Speak Companion-Offspring-"We surrounded his couch-were happy in retrospect, and transported in anticipation."

-o, Lois! cherish your love for him Go, Children! perpetuate his virtues and perfections in his existence!

Avarus, was married, and had children! But he was not a Father!-That is he loved not, nor knew how to be beloved. Avarus and Elizabeth lived, indeed, in the same house; but they seldom met in the same mind. Their children were- "You Rascal"-"You Slut."How was the life of Avarus? Destitute of amiable sensibilities, he was destitute of happiness. "Corroding passions consumed his heart.-Thorns were in his pillow.-His children, having been soured by unjust and untimely severity, were morose, vicious, and "Without natural affection.". What was the End of Avarus? He died without a witness-Was buried without a tear! Elizabeth mourns the effects of a connection, from which she is now relieved--And the children--Ob! that the consequences of parental crimes could be but limited !-The children, vitiated by their Father, rise with his character, and eternize his reproach!
