Lafayette's Aim Was Establishment of Government by the People Throughout the World.
Gilbert Du Motier, Marquis De Lafayette, was a man who did good things in the world. In France he worked for human justice and democracy, and was one of the leaders in the overthrow of the wicked monarchic system of privilege and in the establishment of a government by the people. In America he fought for the freedom of the colonists, and in the end he persuaded France to send the men and the ships that made possible the final victory at Yorktown.
France reveres the memory of Lafayette. Born a nobleman, he was ever a noble man, a man whose motives were unselfish and whose life was devoted to the betterment of the lives of others. America reveres the memory of Lafayette because in America his unselfishness was most nobly exemplified. Not for the freedom of France alone but for the freedom of all the enslaved peoples of the world was Lafayette ever ready to fight or to die.
