While on the subject of Presidential nominations it may be interesting to see what a Washington correspondent of the N. Y. Express says about the matter, as follows:
General Grant's letter to the President endorsing the corrupt and despotic Stanton, has materially damaged, if not totally destroyed, his prospect for the nomination. Mr. Speaker Colfax declared to a Democratic friend, that Grant would not secure the nomination. Others, equally well informed, declare that Chase will have every one of the Southern delegates: that this is a fixed fact, and that he, beyond a peradventure, will be nominated on the first ballot.
The truth is, Chase has been engaged in pipe-laying for the last two years, for this very object, and to promote it, Sprague's money has been freely used.
The National Banks, moreover, have not been backward in coming forward for their great progenitor.
This is the way the immaculate Chief-Justice and his satellites have blocked the game against all competitors.
