Teachers' Meeting
Held Saturday

On Saturday morning, in the county court room, the Greene County Teachers' Association held its regular monthly meeting. After the singing of America, led by Mrs. J. F. King, Rev. Willoughby in a few remarks, spoke of the close relation of the work of the ministers of the gospel and that of public school teachers. He also made mention of the pathetic situation to be seen here in our own town—the great number of boys and girls to be seen daily on the streets when they ought to be in school—and emphasized the importance of a higher ethical and moral standard. Rev. Willoughby then closed the devotional part of the program with an appropriate prayer.

Mrs. King spoke on the subject of music and its importance in the public schools. The speaker said that varied songs should be used and that all teachers should be acquainted with these songs. Others taking part in this discussion and offering suggestions were, Miss Roby Fitzgerald, Miss Glaze, Mrs. Fillers, Prof. Burkhart and Prof. Crum.

In the absence of Prof. Davis, Miss Fitzgerald discussed the subject of science in the elementary schools. She spoke especially on the study of physiology and hygiene and the great demand for these sciences as a result of the recent war. Prof. Easterly discussed the subject further and brought out many good points.

Prof. Bice, of the E. T. N. S., of Johnson City, spoke of the great need of sciences and the applied sciences in the schools of the South. Prof. Bice made an especial appeal for the teaching of country subjects to country children, and said that nature study for its own sake, aside from its cultural value, was of infinite importance.

Miss Irene Dobson talked on "The Possibility of Having Home Economics Taught in Every School," and said that teachers of this subject need special training for their work in order to make it a success.

"Different Phases of the Rural School Problem were taken up by Profs. Williams and Easterly. Both gentlemen made excellent talks and gave some timely suggestions.

Prof. Burkhart's theme was "How the School May Best Serve the Community." He said in part that the teacher is the most important factor in the management of the school, and that his duty was to teach the boys and girls to make a life—not a living.
Supt. Gilbreath, of the E. T. S. N., was next introduced. Supt. Gilbreath made a timely address, and said that since the winning of the war the school was the first and most important agency of reconstruction.

After a few remarks by Supt. Pierce, the meeting was adjourned. The part of the program omitted Saturday morning will be carried out at next meeting, one month hence.

Immediately after adjournment Mrs. A. L. Brown met with the principals of schools in the interest of the Junior Red Cross.

The following teachers were present at this meeting:

Lissa Gardner, Mrs. Harold Lane, Prof. R. W. Mitchell, Hassie Stanton, Fannie Burr Kiser, Lethia Moore, E. Crum, P. C. Williams, Clyde Gass, Fanny Gass, H. R. Easterly, Mrs. W. W. Fuller, C. C. Burgner, Prof. Bible, Miss Fitzgerald, Prof. Burkhart, Stella Myers, Rose Myers, Nora Myers, Ernest Brown, Charles Justis, Mary Reel, J. R. Justis, R. B. Moore, Cora Glaze, Miss Jones, S. Hawkins, Beatrice White, Belle Gibbs, Hazel Shanks, Hazel Stepp, Mary Reed, Blanch Pickering and Carrie Knipp.
