Mr. Editor:--Undoubtedly a communication from me will be unexpected, and I hope you will excuse the liberty I have taken in introducing myself, as circumstances are so that I think I have a right to speak as well as some of my opponents. I have been a reader of the Columbia Democrat, for some time past, and always found it advocating good Union Doctrine. I have been a soldier in Uncle Sam's service since this miserable rebellion has been in existence, but thank God, I have not been abolitionized enough so as to advocate all the doctrines of the present administration, neither do I ever expect to advocate them, as long as we have so many corrupt men at the head of affairs. I voted against illegal arrests and against all the evils of the present administration, and when I did that, of course, I voted against Abraham Lincoln, as our abolition friends call him "The Government." I have been tramping around a great deal of late, and seen the evils of Lincoln and his officeholders in making arrests, carrying people from their homes and confining them in bastiles, for no pretext whatever; and every such sight I see it makes me a more bitter enemy of the administration; so hereafter, as heretofore, I shall use my energies toward putting down abolitionism, and raising the Democracy, so as once more to restore the Union, which in my estimation, will never be done until we have the reins of government in our hands.
