Story of Assault on Clara Hegt by James Plumb Supposed to be a Fairy Tale.
District Attorney Buckmaster this morning ordered that the warrant which had been issued for the arrest of James Plumb, of Milwaukee, on a charge of assaulting Clara Hegt, of Roundout, Ill., be withdrawn and Plumb will not be prosecuted. The action was taken after the attorney had made a visit to Roundout and had listened to a broken story by the girl in which she contradicted herself several times and gave assurance to the attorney that the evidence would never be sufficient to convict Plumb on the charges made in the warrant. It is probable that the warrant was demanded in good faith by the father of the girl but it is not in any way supported by the girl or the circumstances which she relates.
Plumb has been forced to suffer a great deal of inconvenience from the charges brought against him and should have some recourse under the law. Not only was he forced to spend nearly a month behind the bars of the jail but the charges brought against him came to the ears of his higher officials and he has been forced to give up his work with the railway at least temporarily. The Kenosha officials are now doing all in their power to have Plumb restored to his position.
