Red Army Spurred By Stalin's Hand;
Overrun 70 More Nazi-Held Sectors

LONDON, July 26.-(P)-A Red army spurred on by the personal direction of Marshal Joseph Stalin plunged ahead six miles and captured 10 villages today in its four-sided strangulation of the big German base at Orel where thousands of desperate Axis troops face disaster.

A special Moscow communique said that Russian troops had gained from three to six miles on the north, south, and east of Orel. This would put the city under a terrific artillery bombardment since Red army columns have been knocking at the outer gates of the city for several days.

Another Russian column swinging northwest of the city which is the hinge to the entire south-central German front captured two villages between Orel and Zhizdra, 70 miles to the northwest. This group was menacing the last German supply line into Orel, the railway between their base and Bryansk 75 miles to the northwest. The Russians were reported only eight miles from the railway yesterday.

South of Orel the Russians, who already had seized Zmievka, 22 miles south, captured Kurakina and Yerovkina, said the communique as recorded here by the Soviet monitor. Yerovkina apparently is Yeropkina, only 17 miles below Orel.

The German radio commentator, Capt. Ludwig Sertorius, with an unusual display of restraint said that German defenders at Orel had been "kept extremely busy" during the day.

He also commented on a massive Russian drive below Leningrad and farther south in the Lake Ladoga region, saying that it was still too early to tell whether this was only a "temporary phenomenon on the part of the Soviet war machine which is strik-
