Full Text

The election of Porter Smith as City Sergeant is already feared by the radical element of the city. The first public attempt to deceive voters was made by a communication on Thursday morning in the Intelligencer. How much deception is going on covertly no one can tell. But those methods are not surprising, neither will they be successful. Every citizen knows Mr. Smith to be a consistent, upright man, always taking great interest in the affairs of the city, with which, through his official capacity as Councilman, he is perfectly familiar. If Porter Smith is elected there will be some tall overhauling of certain iniquitous dens that are flaunting their wares and vocations as publicly as if they were licensed like any other trade. Of late years there has been no one to say them nay, and they have been flourishing like green bay trees with growing refulgence, until now the central part of the city is literally honeycombed with these Augean stables. There is not only a change of men wanted, but a change of policy; a new organization that will be effective and conscientious in its duty. Mr. Smith will take a pride in doing this, and, what is more, he has the experience and capacity for doing it.
