Full Text
Men of Edgefield; Sherman is marching on Augusta' and in a few days your wives, children, and homes, may be at the mercy of a vindictive and remorseless foe. Blood of South Carolina, blood of the old Revolution, will you stand idly by, and witness the profanation of your domestic altars and the desolation of your homes. Arm yourselves,—Arm your negroes! In God's name, arm even your little children; and hurl back the insolent invader. Hurry to action. Gather up your strength for the death struggle. Concentrate upon the foe, and the storm cloud of war will be averted from your doors. But stand gaping at the news, and let the hour of preparation slip away, and years of anguish will punish your forgetfulness of duty. Arise, or be forever lost.
