CHIEF GRANTS THE LICENSE

QUEEN'S DAUGHTERS MAY HAVE SUNDAY PERFORMANCE

Investigation Convinces Chief That the Affair is Not of a Dramatic Nature

Preparations Go on Busily--Expected That Larger Hall Will be Necessary Than Bijou Can Offer--Sketch of Origin of the Trouble.

Chief Wrinn last night announced that he would give a license to the Queen's Daughters to present their sacred play entitled "Portia, Daughter of Pontius Pilate" next Sunday evening and the performance will be held next Sunday night as scheduled. Chief Wrinn has looked into the performance and after hearing an explanation of the substance of the performance has concluded that the affair does not come within the scope of the law invoked to prevent it and the performance will not be held up.

Father Russell last evening stated that everything would now go on as contemplated except that the place would be changed. The Bijou theater will not be big enough now, said he, and a larger hall will be needed. Perhaps Poll's new theater may be secured, although nothing has been done toward getting a larger hall as yet. Those connected with the entertainment feel that the opposition to it has been rather a help than a detriment.

The objection to the play originated with the Rev. Mr. Mossman of the City Mission, who learned that the Bijou theater had been given for a Sunday night performance. He went to Chief Wrinn and announced the matter to him asking him if he had authorized it. As a license had not then been applied for the chief had not heard of the project. When the license was asked for the chief refused it on the belief that the performance came within the scope of the law prohibiting Sunday performances. On further examination into the substance of the piece the chief concluded otherwise and so decided to grant the license.

The performance is given mainly by children, is of a sacred character and does not partake of the nature of the drama except in pure form.
