At a special meeting of the Mayor and Town Council of Oakland on Monday night, the possibility of difficulty between the Council and Sanders Motor Freight was ironed out satisfactorily, since the company already had made arrangements to lease a parking lot for their trailers.
The special meeting was called to discuss the problem of having the trailers parked on several Oakland streets throughout the week and especially on week-ends.
Francis W. Sanders, owner, appeared before the council and advised that he had leased a lot near the Standard Oil tanks on West Liberty street, from I. M. and N. C. Fraley over two weeks ago which would be used for parking trailers. The Mayor and council members told Sanders they would do all they could to help him with his business in Oakland.
Some figures in regard to the trucking company were listed for the council's benefit at Monday's meeting to indicate the value of the company to the town of Oakland. Sanders related that the company had paid Oakland employees, not including employees located outside the city or Mt Lake Park, during 1952, the sum of $61,909.98; paid for trucks rented from Oakland employees $65,007.40; paid for truck licenses in Maryland $3,732, of which the town of Oakland received $354 and the county a similar sum; paid in gasoline and diesel fuel taxes to the state the sum of $12,725, of which the town of Oakland received a portion; spent with merchants, dealers, wholesalers, etc, located in Oakland, $59,260.22, which did not include payments on equipment or any capital expenditures.
For 306 working days during 1952 Sanders said the company put into Oakland $630.40 each day which did not include gasoline tax refund the town receives from the state. He added that the company did not average $20 in freight revenue per day for the same period from shippers and receivers of freight in Oakland.
The company covers Maryland and West Virginia and has terminals in Baltimore, Cumberland, Oakland, Clarksburg, Parkersburg and Wheeling. Twenty-eight persons are employed in Oakland, with 50 being employed over the entire system. The operation has been growing over the past twenty years.
