Negro Health Week April 4-11

The week of April 4 to 11 will be observed as Negro Health week here in Dayton. A special program is being planned in cooperation with the 34th nation-wide program of the United States public health service. The program was completed last evening by a committee in charge of the event which met in the Fifth street Y.

General chairman of the committee is Joseph G. Larkins, he will be aided by J. L. Scott, physical instructor of the Y; Clarence Pauley, city health inspector; William Ellis, city fire inspector and Wallace O. Hawkins, executive secretary of the Y.

As part of this Health week observance, local citizens will be called on to improve the condition of the homes by painting and cleaning: health literature will be distributed, and illustrated lectures will be proffered. In this program the city health department will render full assistance, and the use of its facilities.

The Daily Express heartily endorses this gesture toward increasing the living standards of the community. We would like to add 51 more weeks and ask that it be a 52-week task each year to make a special effort to improve our health habits.

A healthy people is imperative if we are to advance culturally, politically and socially, to say nothing of economically.

Let us strain our efforts to remedy our health and sanitary shortcomings. Let's maintain cleaner homes, and cleaner, neater persons, so that the Negro Health week of the future will be a mere bagatelle.
