Full Text

ADMIRAL HAWKE. About 28 years ago, was in Boston, Lieutenant of the Station Ship under Capt. Durell. The Gentlemen of the Town, who were then acquainted with him, spoke of him with the highest Esteem. He was sent for to Jamaica to take the Command of a Ship in the Squadron there under Sir Chaloner Ogle. A few Years after he convoyed a Fleet of Merchantmen belonging to the Northern Plantations to St. Eustatia. The Masters gave such an Account of his kind and obliging Treatment, that upon his Arrival at Boston, the Owners of all that belonged here waited on him in a Body to give him their Thanks. More important Employments and Services were soon prepared for him. By the great Share he had in the Destruction of the Enemy's Fleet the last War, he not only merited highly of Great Britain, but greatly contributed to the Preservation of a neighbour Republick, the Continuance whereof in Being was owing, perhaps, to the Advantages gained by the British Navy over that of the French. How much the Successes of the last Year are owing to his Vigilance in blocking up the Ships of the Enemy the whole Summer past, it is not possible to determine. This last most happy and most important Action must certainly cover him with Laurels.
